Florida News That Impacts You – February 27th, 2025

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

  • Governor DeSantis announced on Wednesday that all 67 Sheriff’s offices in Florida have now executed a 287(g) Task Force agreement with ICE – making Florida the only state in the country to do so. The news comes after recent legislation signed into law, compelled law enforcement agencies in the state to work with ICE. Most counties were already participating with the optional ICE program that allows local law enforcement agencies to carry out many ICE related functions, in addition to providing cooperation for ICE agents within law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • John Morgan, a lifelong Democrat and mega-donor/fundraiser for the party has announced that he’s going to launch his own political party – which some believe could be a precursor to running for governor. Morgan announced this on X when he posted: I am forming a new political party for those of us stuck in the middle. Our two party system is broken due to Gerrymandering and divisive issues… both sides. No labels is not an option. Everyone wants a team or tribe. Ron Myers is my lawyer drafting the paperwork
  • The Martin County School District is touting the success of the District’s cell phone ban. Under the District’s “you use it, you lose it” system – any student found using cell phones during class lose their cell phone for the day and their parents are made to retrieve it at the end of the day. The policy has led to a 72% decline in disciplinary actions related to cellphone use, including less bullying and social media postings of inappropriate material.
  • Partly cloudy skies with a chance of passing showers today and highs in the upper 70’s – typical for this date. We’re expecting similar weather for the rest of the week.
  • Gas prices dropped a penny per gallon statewide on Wednesday and a bit more than that locally. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.14 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.30 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.17 and in Indian River County the average is $3.14 per gallon.
