MIAMI, FL — Bonnie Tyler, the powerhouse Welsh vocalist whose gravelly, operatic voice defined the sound of 1980s arena rock, has died at the age of 75.
Her family and management team confirmed that the singer passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday night, July 8, 2026, at a hospital in Faro, Portugal. Tyler had been battling severe health complications following an emergency intestinal surgery in May.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler rose to global fame in the late 1970s with her breakthrough hit "It's a Heartache." However, she secured permanent pop-culture royalty in 1983 with the release of the bombastic, Jim Steinman-produced power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart"—a chart-topping masterpiece that recently surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. Her signature husky, raspy voice—the result of a vocal chord operation early in her career—also fueled the iconic 1984 Footloose soundtrack smash, "Holding Out for a Hero."

In August 2017, Tyler flew into South Florida to headline what would become one of the most highly publicized promotional events in maritime history. Setting sail from PortMiami aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, Tyler stood on the ship's outdoor AquaTheater stage to perform "Total Eclipse of the Heart" live at the exact moment the moon completely blocked the sun during the historic 2017 total solar eclipse.
