New York Magazine political correspondent Olivia Nuzzi insisted that her alleged relationship with married former Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was not physical in nature, the New York Post reports.

Nuzzi, 31, who was placed on leave due to the alleged relationship, admitted in a statement Thursday (September 19) night that “the nature of some communications between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal." The journalist didn't specifically mention Kennedy, 70, by name, however, penned a profile on the former presidential candidate that was published in November 2023 and is reported to have had a relationship with him at some point after that, Status News initially reported.

Nuzzi and Kennedy were allegedly sexting while she was still engaged to Politico chief Washington correspondent Ryan Lizza, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the New York Post. Kennedy is married to actress Cheryl Hines, best known for her role as Cheryl David in the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm.

New York Magazine confirmed Nuzzi's confession to Status Magazine amid questioning about the alleged the affair.

"Recently our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures," a spokesperson said.

"Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign," the spokesperson added. "An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust."

Nuzzi was named to Forbes' 2018 '30 under 30' list and a finalist for the 2023 National Magazine Award for feature writing. Kennedy recently announced his decision to end his campaign and endorse former President Donald Trump.
