A fan died after falling from the stands during the Nations League soccer final between Spain and Portugal in Munich Sunday (June 8), the BBC reports.

The man, identified as someone living in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district of Bavaria, fell from his seat in the middle tier section of Allianz Arena to the lower tier and onto a staircase in the media area, having been pronounced dead at the scene. The Munich Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident but early indications found "no evidence to suggest foul play."

"Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06. Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time," the Union of European Football Associations said in a statement obtained by the BBC.

Portugal defeated Spain, 5-3, on penalties after the two teams finished tied at 2. A spokesperson for the Portugal national team said the death "casts a shadow on our victory" and coach Roberto Martinez referred to the incident as "extremely sad news."

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente also issued a public statement following news of the fan's death.

"I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life," de la Fuente said via the BBC.
