- Florida’s second detention and deportation facility for illegal aliens has been dubbed Deportation Depot by the state. Governor DeSantis made the announcement on Thursday while saying that the new facility will be established at the Baker Correctional Institution, a state prison, west of Jacksonville. The initial capacity will be 1,300 with plans to expand to 2,000. Eta is two to three weeks.
- Florida CFO Blaise Ingoglia provided an update on the state’s newly launched DOGE efforts of local governments saying auditors have found “pretty egregious examples of waste, fraud and abuse”. Ingoglia said reports from the state detailing findings from local governments will take place in approximately 60 days from the conclusion of the audits. Palm Beach County is scheduled for an audit starting Monday.

- The National Hurricane Center is tracking two systems. A disturbance in the southwestern Gulf approaching southern Texas has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone. Erin is expected to develop into the first hurricane of this season this morning and is expected to develop into a major hurricane this weekend. All leading models now show the system turning north on the approach to the Caribbean towards Bermuda. It’s worth keeping an eye on until it makes the turn.
- Gas prices were flat on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.13 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.27 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.19, it’s $3.15 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $3.13 per gallon.
