In our Election Spotlight for this entry is the race for an open seat in the Florida House of Representatives. Democrat David Silvers is termed out in his District 89 seat and there are two candidates running in the Democrat primary.

Destinie Baker Sutton is an attorney who worked to represent the Palm Beach County Commissioners in court after spending time as a prosecutor. She's currently a personal injury attorney and wants to be in the Legislature.

"I was running for office because I'm just frustrated about a lot of the things that we see in terms of education, teachers, healthcare and in particular our mental health, and also affordable housing and the skyrocketing insurance that we see here locally and all over the state of Florida."

She referenced education first and that is a common theme in this race.

Baker Sutton's husband is a high school history teacher and her primary opponent Debra Tendrich is touting the support of retired and active public school teachers who are unhappy with current legislation regarding the public education system in our state.

Tendrich, who ran unsuccessfully for the Delray Beach Commission in 2020, is a supporter of DEI or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in schools and universities.

"If you look around the room, in the classroom, we don't all look the same. We need to be educated about different cultures, different countries, different languages, different religions so that we can understand and know how to accept each other."

She operates a nonprofit that helps low-income families with grocery assistance and teaches kids about nutrition.

Keeping with the education theme, Republican candidate Daniel Zapata, who is waiting in the wings to face the winner of this race in November, is a private school administrator.
