Jupiter's mayoral race is in our Election Spotlight this morning.
Incumbent Mayor Jim Kuretski is being challenged by Council member Cameron May.
Kuretski served on the Town Council for nearly 20 years before first running for mayor and winning three years ago. He's a retired engineer who spent over 40 years working for FPL.
Kuretski is also on the Palm Beach County Transportation Planning agency and we spoke about steps being made to improve traffic along Indiantown Road, which is a state road.
Kuretski has been a big supporter of the upcoming Jupiter Fire Rescue Department, which will replace Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in the town next year. He says it just makes sense financially.
"The County Commission and the (County Fire Rescue) Union decided well no we need to increase our ad valorem tax rate to the tune of a quarter billion dollars over ten years. I don't know how anybody, any elected official or candidate can be out there advocating (for) a tax increase of a quarter billion dollars to our residents and businesses every ten years."
One elected official AND candidate who was pushing to stay with the county was Councilmember Cameron May.
He's a Palm Beach County firefighter, but says that's not why he opposed the town forming its own fire department.
"The only reason I was opposed to it was because when they decided to vote to create Jupiter Fire Rescue and cancel the contract that we had just signed with Palm Beach County for another ten years, it wasn't in my mind properly noticed on the agenda as something we'd be taking action on."
May says he has since voted in favor of things like locations of the two new stations being built and the type of equipment being purchased.
The municipal elections span 12 municipalities in Palm Beach County on March 11.
