One traffic safety law that passed last year in the Florida Legislature is being put to use on the Treasure Coast.
It authorizes the use of electronic speed detection systems in school zones and the St. Lucie County Commission this week voted to implement the cams in a number of school zones.
Drivers caught on camera going more than ten miles over the speed limit will be automatically fined $100. Just as with red light cameras, the fine will be automatically mailed out to the addressed linked to the license plate.
The county conducted a study that found there were almost 350 traffic incidents in or near the nine school zones where the cameras are being posted between September of 2021 and last September.
St. Lucie County is working to find a vendor to install the cameras and expect to have them up and running in time for the 2024-25 school year.
The speed detection cameras will be implemented in the following school zones:
Fort Pierce Westwood Academy
Forest Grove Middle School
Lakewood Park Elementary (has two school zones)
Independence Classical Academy
Samuel Gaines Academy
White City Elementary
Orange Avenue Baptist School
Weatherbee Elementary School
