A woman convicted in a deadly hit and run that claimed the life of a ten-year old Fort Pierce girl has learned her fate.
25-year old Arianna Colon was convicted of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. In 2021, she struck Yaceny Gonzalez as the girl was getting onto her school bus, then kept driving.
On Tuesday morning, Colon begged the judge for leniency and apologized to the family of the victim.
"I ask for some type of chance and I can tell you that it will not be taken for granted once again. Thank you, your honor and to Yaceny's family, please forgive me and know that I'm truly sorry."
Defense attorney Jerome Stone says his client has shown remorse.
"Judge we ask that you administer justice (and) show compassion and mercy to Mrs. Colon. We think that appropriate sentence in this case would be a ten year sentence in the Department of Corrections, followed by the appropriate amount of probation."
Prosecutors requested a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison after Colon continued to insist that she was unaware of what she had done until she got home and saw the news about the accident.
"A day less than the max, Judge, is too little. And that's why the state never made an offer. I've been clear from the beginning."
Ultimately, the judge gave Colon 12 years and one month behind bars.
