There's a new scam targeting people along the Treasure Coast that tries to get victims to pay up to avoid embarrassment.
Port St. Lucie Police say the scammers send an email claiming the victim has visited adult content websites that had malware installed, enabling the suspect to access the victim's cellphone camera, as well as their contacts.
They demand thousands in bitcoin to avoid the evidence being sent to those contacts.
The email also includes a photo of the victim's house but police tell CBS 12 News that the information is accessible through online searches and residents should be aware this is just a scam.
Victims should contact law enforcement.
