There is a large food distribution event happening this weekend at the Boynton Beach Mall.

It's conducted every Saturday morning near the old Sears Car Care Center and hosted by the Palm Beach County based Restoration Bridge International.

"About 100,000 families in Palm Beach County benefit from the work that Restoration Bridge does."

That's former Palm Beach County Commissioner Michael Barnett who joined up as Director of Development with the nonprofit after unsuccessfully running for election to a full term last year. He had been appointed to the Commission by the governor.

"I only had two years as a commissioner but it was an amazing two years. Successful, maybe not in getting reelected but in the work we did in my office. Part of that was getting to meet agencies and organizations on the ground in my district and around the county that are helping people that are very much in need."

He says Restoration Bridge International was one of those organizations, which helps feed those in our community who need the assistance.

"Collecting food and distributing it to about 250 different pantries and food drives all around the county."

Barnett says the nonprofit is always in need of help, including volunteers for the food drives.

"In particular, if you have warehouse experience, you know how to operate a forklift or if you can drive a truck and you have your trucking license (CDL), or if you are free to visit a food distribution site and help bag and separate and distribute food we definitely need the help. Volunteers and also financial resources if you're willing to donate."

Tomorrow's distribution event starts between 8:45 and 9 a.m. and goes until the food runs out.

Barnett says last Saturday's event fed 1,500 families and he points out that 97 cents of every dollar donated to Restoration Bridge International goes to the organization's food program.
