Hernando County, FL - Over the weekend, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded to a water rescue after two individuals allegedly tried to navigate the Gulf of Mexico in an inflatable pool.
The unusual incident occurred despite a small craft advisory being in effect for parts of the Gulf due to strong winds and rough seas.
According to HCSO, the two individuals launched the inflatable pool from Hernando Beach and initially appeared to be enjoying smooth waters.
However, conditions quickly worsened, leaving them in distress.
A nearby marine deputy responded and escorted the pair safely back to shore.
No injuries were reported.
Following the rescue, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media emphasizing safety.
“We’re glad everyone made it back safely, but let this serve as a reminder: inflatable pools belong in the backyard, not open water,” the post read.
The sheriff’s office highlighted that inflatable pools are not designed for open water navigation and advised residents to always check weather conditions before entering the Gulf or other bodies of water.
Officials also reminded the public that small craft advisories indicate potentially dangerous conditions, including strong winds and rough seas.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office continues to encourage residents to prioritize safety and exercise caution on the water.
