Miami-Dade, FL - A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a dog Saturday morning in the Gladeview neighborhood after the animal allegedly attacked a woman and her 5-year-old child.
The incident took place in the 2200 block of Northwest 64th Street, where several loose dogs reportedly approached and bit the woman while she walked with her child. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were called to the area following reports of a dog attack.
The woman received treatment at the scene, and her child was unharmed.
While investigating the initial attack, deputies said one of the dogs returned and allegedly lunged at a deputy.
Fearing for their safety, the deputy fired, fatally wounding the dog.
The dog was identified by its owner, Willie Loyd, as his pet named Dot. Loyd stated he was inside his home when he heard the commotion and gunshots.
He and his nephew, Demetrio Davis, confirmed that Dot was the only dog in the incident for which Loyd was responsible, while the other dogs were strays that Loyd occasionally fed in his yard.
Davis expressed frustration over the shooting, noting that Dot was a small dog and Loyd’s favorite pet.
Loyd also emphasized that the other dogs involved in the attack were not his responsibility.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident is under investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the attacks by the loose dogs.
