Tampa, FL - An 8-year-old boy was taken to a hospital Friday afternoon after he was allegedly struck by a vehicle while getting off a school bus in Tampa.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the incident occurred just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of East Yukon Street and Greenwood Avenue.

Authorities reported that the school bus had its stop signs deployed when a black Lexus sedan attempted to pass.

The vehicle allegedly struck the child, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

Emergency responders transported the boy to a nearby hospital for evaluation, and officials stated that his injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

The driver of the Lexus remained at the scene following the collision and was cited for failing to stop for a school bus, a violation under Florida law.

Florida law requires that all vehicles stop when a school bus has its stop signs extended to protect children boarding or exiting the bus.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of the driver and the conditions at the scene.

No additional details about the driver have been released at this time.

This incident underscores the importance of following traffic laws near school buses and exercising caution in school zones.

Authorities remind all drivers to remain vigilant, obey stop signs on school buses, and ensure the safety of children in these areas.
