Miami-Dade Commissioners Discuss Filling District 5 Seat Vacancy

Miami-Dade Commissioners discussing options for filling the district 5 seat left vacant from the resignation of Eileen Higgins, who's in a runoff for Miami mayor next month. Barry University's Sean Foreman says commissioners can appoint a short-term replacement within thirty days or call for a special election to be held within ninety days. Higgins' term is up in three years. If a replacement is appointed, he or she would face voters next year and again in 2028. The winner of a special election would serve through 2028.
