Meteorological Winter Begins Today

It doesn't say winter on your calendar but today marks the start of "Meteorological Winter". NOAA Meteorologist Stanley Goldenberg says the winter refers to December, January and February, because dividing the year into four three-month periods simplifies the calculation of statistics. Astronomical winter is determined by the position of the Earth in relation to the Sun, beginning on the winter solstice December 21st.
