A reminder about open carry becoming the law of the land in Florida as the result of an appeals court ruling late last year that struck down the state's b an on the open carry of firearms.
It was brought to the forefront over the weekend when people started calling 911 along the Treasure Coast upon seeing a man walking through public areas carrying a rifle and a pistol.
People tell CBS 12 News it was very concerning to see.
"I mean it's their right but do you need to do that? You kind of get an agenda and you want somebody to attack you or do something foolish. Otherwise why would you do it?"
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek says the man who was spotted and whose photos appear on social media is what's known as a Second Amendment "auditor," or someone who intentionally performs lawful acts in public to document how law enforcement react to their constitutional rights.
Still, the sheriff doesn't discourage anyone concerned from calling 911.
"Take the guns, take all that away. If you're walking down the sidewalk, a deputy has a legal reason to come up and stop you, ask who you are, where you're going and what you're doing. The same thing applies to him open-carrying, going down the sidewalk."
He says the Sheriff's Office will continue to uphold these constitutional rights.
