(Leisure City, FL) - Tragedy in South Miami-Dade as a 6-year-old boy drowns just days before the Memorial Day holiday.

Miami-Dade Sheriff's Deputies arrived to find the missing child in a body of water late Tuesday evening.

Despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Homicide Bureau has now taken over this drowning investigation.

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz highlighting drowning prevention as Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the swim season.

She warns, "Drowning is the single leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 in Miami-Dade, and in Florida we had the deadliest year for child drownings with 119 deaths in 2025."

As a result, Miami-Dade officials are expanding access to free swim lessons and water safety education for thousands of children countywide. The "Zero Drownings in Miami-Dade" initiative provides children with 10-free water safety swim lessons along with transportation.
