Several bills cleared legislative votes in Tallahassee on Wednesday. The Florida legislature has passed the Educational Scholarship Programs bill mostly along party lines. The bill provides dedicated funding to Florida’s universal school choice program while streamlining the process for parents to enroll their children into Florida’s school choice program. The bill goes to Governor DeSantis who is expected to sign it.
The Florida House of Representatives passed the Civil Liability for the Wrongful Death of an Unborn Child bill on a party line vote. The bill recognizes an unborn child at any stage of pregnancy and would allow for civil litigation against any party responsible for the negligent loss of an unborn child. The companion bill in the Senate has cleared one committee vote thus far. The state senate unanimously passed the Fraudulent Use of Gift Cards bill. The bill raises the penalty for unlawful gift card use to a first-degree misdemeanor for offenses up to $750 and a third-degree felony for offenses above $750. The bill awaits a vote in the House. The Food and Hemp Products bill, that would regulate hemp products sold in the state, passed with bipartisan support. It’s currently in committee in the House. The state senate unanimously passed the Emergency Preparedness and Response bill would streamline the state’s process for debris removal following a disaster with coordination between local and state agencies. The bill awaits committee votes in the House. The state senate unanimously passed the Wine Containers bill that further loosens the regulations for containers that wine can be sold in statewide allowing for additional recyclable containers to be used. The senate unanimously passed the flood disclosures bill. The bill mandates landlords provide tenants with flood risk information prior to the signing of a rental agreement. The House version of the bill is in committee. The Senate unanimously passed the Specific Medical Diagnoses in Child Protective Investigations bill. The bill would provide additional rights to parents of children removed from homes by DCF – including the ability to seek 3rd party opinions about a child’s wellbeing in certain circumstances. The bill is in a House committee.

Gas prices dropped two cents per gallon Wednesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.18 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.33 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.22 and in Indian River County the average is $3.21 per gallon.
