- NOAA is calling for an “above-normal” hurricane season due to especially warm ocean temperatures and a rotation from an El Nino weather pattern, which helps limit tropical activity in the Atlantic, into a La Nina weather pattern that is especially favorable for tropical formations. NOAA’s forecast projections are similar to those issued by Colorado State University, The Weather Channel and AccuWeather.
- A day after blocking enforcement of Florida’s law banning the transporting of illegal immigrants in Florida, the same federal judge is reopening examination of the law. In an order issued Thursday, Judge Altman said that “on further reflection we now invite further briefing on the proper scope of the injunctions”. The judge has given petitioners, the Farmworker Association of Florida and the state until June 6th to make additional arguments in favor of their position.
- Florida’s Supreme Court has ruled law enforcement officers may order drivers to exit their vehicles prior to conducting a drug sweep of a vehicle. The case stemmed from a 2018 incident in Tampa in which a driver refused to leave his vehicle preventing a proper drug sweep. The driver was arrested and removed after he refused to exit his vehicle. During the sweep the driver was found to have been in possession of meth.
- Today is a repeat of the past couple of days. It'll be hot and dry with highs in the upper 80’s which is about 6 degrees higher than usual for this date. Similar but hotter weather is expected throughout the weekend with temps in the low 90’s.
- Gas prices have dropped by 2 cents on average over the past day in advance of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.54 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.73 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.60 and in Indian River County the average is $3.49 per gallon.
