- Florida is experiencing the highest rate of home-purchase cancellations in the country according to a new analysis by real estate firm Redfin. According to the report the Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa metros have all experienced pending home contracts to purchase cancelled at a greater than 20% rate most recently, compared to a national average that’s below 15%. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro is also among the highest nationally with a cancellation rate of nearly 18%. The spiking cancellation activity is being attributed to would-be buyers being scared off from purchasing once realizing the total cost of home ownership once potential HOA dues and insurance costs are factored in.
- The Indian River School District will be cracking down on students attempting to vape at school when the new school year gets underway next month. The District has installed vape monitors in select boys and girls restrooms and locker rooms. The monitors are mounted on the ceiling and are protected from tampering. When a monitor detects vaping taking place it alerts the principal and assistant principals of the school where they’re installed. The school district tested the monitors during the prior school year, nabbing 55 students in the process before the wider rollout for the upcoming year. Offending students receive a citation from a deputy and are placed in in-school suspension for three days.
- The Boynton Beach Police Department is warning of a new impersonation scam in the city. Scammers are calling residents, posing as police officers, and warning that there is a warrant out for their arrest. The scammers are then advising residents that the issue can be resolved through a payment in a cash app. Boynton Beach PD will not place call to advise of arrest warrants and they don’t accept payment in lieu of arrest. Anyone contacted by one of these scammers is advised to report it to the Boynton Beach PD through their non-emergency line.
- Today will be similar to yesterday with a mix of clouds and rain today with a high in the upper 80’s. Temperatures will be about 2 degrees warmer than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center is tracking a disturbance in the Atlantic that could develop into a tropical depression later this week with the potential to impact Florida. The system currently has a 60% chance of development over the next seven days.
- Gas prices rose a penny on Monday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.39 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.57 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.43 and in Indian River County the average is $3.38 per gallon.
