Florida News That Impacts You – October 22nd, 2024      

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.       

  • While we await the state’s first aggregated reporting on Monday’s start to early voting, turnout was strong locally on Monday. A total of 26,725 early votes were cast in Palm Beach County on Monday, with 5,559 early voters in Martin and 3,969 voters in Indian River County. Republicans meaningfully outvoted Democrats in all three counties. 
  • Early voting continues today. In Palm Beach County there are 26 early voting locations that will be open from 7 am to 7 pm daily through Sunday, November 3rd. For residents of Martin County, there are six early voting locations operating from 8 am to 5 pm daily through Saturday, November 2nd and in Indian River County early voting will be held at three locations from 8 am until 4 pm through Saturday, November 2nd. As a reminder you’re able to vote in any early voting location within the county that you’re registered to vote in. You need to bring a government issued photo ID when you go to the polls. 
  • A total of 1,165,746 Floridians have voted via vote by mail ballots with Democrats having out voted Republicans by 72,460 voters prior to the state’s first statewide update for early voting.  
  • The alleged financial misfeasance within the West Palm Beach Police Department that led to the firing of Police Chief Frank Adderley, may result in criminal charges for several police officers. WPTV has confirmed that seven police officers were placed on administrative leave for financial misconduct which appears to have centered around overtime abuse and related financial misconduct. The State Attorney’s Public Corruption Unit is leading the investigation that could lead to charges for the alleged offending officers.  
  • Sunny skies and breezy today with highs in the low 80’s - which is a little higher than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center is tracking one system. Tropical Storm Oscar is making its way northeast through the eastern Bahamas and out to sea in the general direction of Bermuda. 
  • Gas prices dropped a penny on Monday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.08 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.24 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.13 and in Indian River County the average is $3.06 per gallon.
