Florida News That Impacts You – November 7th, 2024 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.     

  • Record turnout for Tuesday’s presidential election was reported in Martin County with 85% of eligible voters casting a ballot. Palm Beach and Indian River Counties were near record territory as well with 84% turnout in the Palm Beaches and 83% in Indian River. Turnout statewide totaled just under 67% - above the national average of 65%. 
  • As voter analysis continues to roll in following the largest win for a presidential candidate since George H.W. Bush in 1988, the largest improvement for the GOP within the state came from Hispanic/Latino voters. President Trump won an estimated 32% of the Hispanic vote in Florida four years ago. He won 45% of the vote on Tuesday. Culturally conservative Hispanic voters also proved key in rejecting Amendments 3 and 4 statewide.  
  • Following a dominant performance in his re-election bid for Senate, Florida’s former governor and junior senator Rick Scott is seeking to become the next senate majority leader. On Wednesday, Senator Scott told Fox Business: “I’m going to win. They know I’ve got a great working relationship with Trump, with Speaker Mike Johnson, they know I’m a business guy, business guys get things done. We create a plan. We work our mission, we measure things, we create teams. That’s exactly what we want in the Senate, and that’s why I’ll be the next majority leader and we’re going to get Trump’s agenda accomplished. A vote for a new leader will take place prior to the incoming congress in January. 
  • Passing showers are possible and it’ll be a bit windy again today with highs in the low to mid 80’s, a little warmer than usual for this date. The National Hurricane Center is tracking two systems. Hurricane Rafael has made its way into the Gulf and is tracking west and then is expected to bend south without making landfall in the US. Advisories in the Florida Keys have been dropped. A disturbance near the Leeward Islands has a 30% chance of developing over the next seven days.  
  • Gas prices were flat on Wednesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.14 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.29 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.19 and in Indian River County the average is $3.17 per gallon.
