Florida News That Impacts You – February 13th, 2025 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.    

  • Governor DeSantis announced a new Boater Freedom Initiative on Wednesday. As stated by the governor, the proposed legislation would: (Prevent) local bans on vessels based on fuel type, repeal the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)’s authority to conduct random vessel safety inspections without probable cause, and direct FWC to create a five-year safety inspection decal program linked to vessel registration. Additionally, funds for additional boat ramps, parking, and marina programs through FWC are part of the bill that will be considered by the legislature in the upcoming legislative session that begins March 4th.  
  • The US Department of Education is investigating the Palm Beach County School District regarding the handling of an antisemitic bullying incident last year. A complaint was filed with the Department of Education August 24th of last year. No details have been provided about the students or school involved in the complaint. The School District issued this statement: The School District is actively combating antisemitism and all forms of bigotry in order to foster a positive learning environment in our schools. We take any claim regarding antisemitic behavior very seriously. 
  • Bankrupt JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts will close hundreds of locations nationwide including numerous locations throughout Florida. Stores scheduled to close include the Northlake Blvd. location in West Palm Beach, the State Road 7 location in Wellington and 20th Street store in Vero Beach.  
  • Sunny skies and warm today with highs in the mid-80's – warmer than usual for this date. Rain will make its way into the area on the Treasure Coast tonight.  
  • Gas prices dropped another two cents per gallon on Wednesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.09 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.23 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.05 and in Indian River County the average is $3.06 per gallon
