- Today is runoff Election Day for voters in Jupiter and Lake Worth Beach. In Jupiter, a runoff election is being held for the First District’s seat in an at-large race. Phylis Choy and Teri Grooms face off against one another. In Lake Worth Beach, the District #4 Commission runoff between Anthony Segrich and Greg Richter takes place. Voting in these communities is from 7 am to 7 pm today.
- As Florida’s property insurance market continues to recover, Florida’s insurance commissioner is set to commence another round of policy transfers from Citizen’s Insurance, the state’s insurer of last resort. Offers for approximately 130,000 policy holders, or about 15% of the existing Citizens policy count, will be coming from three property insurance companies, Slide, Patriot and Mangrove insurance. Property owners must switch if the offers are within 20% of the existing policy cost from Citizens. Citizens has reduced its policy count by nearly half since the peak of the insurance crisis two years ago.
- South Florida has entered severe drought conditions according to the National Weather Service – with all of Palm Beach County currently in a severe drought condition along with most of Broward and Miami Dade. Overall, for the state of Florida, this year’s dry season has been the 37th driest on record with over an inch less of rain for the average location across the state. South Florida has only had about 18% of the typical rainfall as the driest location within the state.
- Cloudy skies with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms and warm today with highs in the low 80’s which is a bit warmer than usual for this date. We’ll have clearer and slightly cooler weather on Wednesday.
- Gas prices surged from the lowest price of the year on Monday as the so called “summer blend” of fuel has begun to make its way into gas stations. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.09 per gallon - 13 cents higher than yesterday. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.22 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.15 and in Indian River County the average is $3.12 per gallon.
