  • As Florida’s state legislative session moves into its three final weeks, six bills have cleared the Florida legislature and are on Governor DeSantis’ desk for consideration. The six bills are Peer Support for First Responders, which would expand the definition of first responders to include correctional officers; Electronic Transmittal of Court Orders which would require court records related Risk Protection Orders, the Baker Act and Marchman Act to be electronically communicated to law enforcement within 6 hours of being issued; The Designation of the Gulf of Mexico bill which would formally recognize the name Gulf of America instead of the Gulf of Mexico; Gulf of America which would require all state resources that currently reference the Gulf of Mexico be changed to the federally recognized name of Gulf of America; Pet Insurance and Wellness Programs, which would require greater transparency from pet insurance companies about what is an isn’t covered along with the ability for policy holders to “return” insurance policies within a short timeframe, and prevents medical exams for pets be required for policy renewals; and Trust Funds, which would reestablish the resilient Florida Trust Fund within the Department of Environmental Protection. The governor has until the 18th to sign these bills into law or to veto them. Related... 
  • This week figures to be the busiest week of the state session with dozens of bills potentially set to clear both bodies of the state legislature. 
  • Florida Atlantic University, The University of Florida and the University of South Florida have submitted their paperwork to opt into ICE’s 287(g) program for combating illegal immigration. Under the plan, campus security personnel will be deputized to carry out immigration related services on behalf of ICE. All three universities cited compliance with state law as the reason.  
  • Sunny and warm with highs in the low 80’s which is typical for this date. We can expect similar weather throughout the week. 
  • Gas prices fell nine cents per gallon over the weekend and are nine cents lower than a week ago. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.09 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.23 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.04 and in Indian River County the average is $3.09 per gallon.
