- Governor DeSantis signed three veterans themed bills into law. The Veteran and Spouse Nursing Home Beds law streamlines access to long-term care for veterans and their spouses by removing bureaucratic obstacles like Certificate of Needs processes. The Veterans law expands suicide prevention programs to include early recognition of mental health conditions and directs the creation of a statewide plan for adult health care centers dedicated to veterans. The Veterans’ Benefits Assistance law seeks to protect veterans from predatory practices while navigating the benefits process. The law raises penalties for violators and explicitly bans referral kickbacks, prohibits misleading guarantees, and mandates that anyone offering paid benefits must pass a high-level background check.
- It’s a key week for the Florida Legislature, which voted to extend the state legislative session for a second time as they’ve yet to come to a budget agreement. The most recent extension is until June 18th amid ongoing differences between the House and Senate over spending levels and the best way to handle tax cuts. Under law a budget must be produced prior to July 1st.
