- While in Boca Raton on Thursday, Governor DeSantis announced the launch of a new accreditation system for the state’s universities. Called the Commission for Public Higher Education, the new accreditor will replace the previous accreditation system in Florida and five other states. According to the governor, the new accreditation model will focus on student outcomes, process efficiency, and the pursuit of excellence for public postsecondary education.
- The seven West Palm Beach Police officers involved in a high-speed chase resulting in the death of a woman and her pregnant daughter last July in Boynton Beach have been fired. The officers were found to have ignored a crash scene involving the victims, failing not only to assist the injured women, but also for not even calling the crash in for additional assistance.
- We’ll have a chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the day today with highs in the upper 80’s, which is typical for this date. Similar weather is expected through the weekend. Saharan dust is continuing across the Atlantic with a sizeable plumb currently moving over Florida and into the Gulf of America.
- The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance in the Northwest Caribbean that has a 20% chance of development in the Bay of Campeche along Mexico’s coastline.
- Gas prices dropped another three cents per gallon on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.00 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.17 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.04 and in Indian River County the average is $3.01 per gallon.
