- Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency began audits of Broward County and the City of Gainesville as the first of what are expected to be dozens of audits of local governments as part of the state’s new initiative to, in the words of Governor DeSantis, “ensure transparency and accountability in government. The prioritization of local governments for the audits is based on financial reporting, including a survey each local government had to provide to the state in April. The state confirmed that the task force will next audit Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Orange counties in addition to Jacksonville.
- Lake Worth Beach, near the pier, was briefly evacuated Thursday evening after a military ordnance washed up onshore. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office’s Bomb Squad arrived and removed the military marker with the area reopening at around 8 p.m.
- Starting at 8 tonight, an eight-day closure of Northlake Blvd. at Beeline Highway will begin for CSX to be able to make major repairs to the railroad crossing, which will include removing rails, panels and signals. It’s been a priority for the repairs to be made prior to the start of the new school year.
- Today kicks off the month-long back to school state sales tax holiday. School supplies up to $50 in value, clothing under $100 and personal computers and related accessories up to $1,500 are included.
- It'll be partly cloudy and hot again today with highs in the low 90’s, which is warmer than usual for this date. A dense plume of Saharan dust is on its way through the Caribbean and will impacting Florida this weekend keeping hot and dry conditions in place. Related...
- The National Hurricane Center’s 7-day Tropical Weather Outlook is clear with no tropical cyclone activity expected.
- Gas prices dropped another two cents per gallon on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.99 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.12 per gallon, in Martin the average is $2.98 and in Indian River County the average is $3.02 per gallon.
