  • Governor DeSantis named state Senator Jay Collins to be the state’s new Lt. Governor replacing Jeanette Nunez who became the president of FIU earlier this year. 
  • Florida’s property insurance industry turned out it’s best year since 2015 last year according to the latest Property Insurance Stability Report from Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation. 2024 marked the first year in a decade in which the property insurance industry took in more in premiums than it paid out in claims. This came amid multiple major hurricanes making landfall in the state but against the backdrop of successful reforms passed by the state.  
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is set to meet at 8:30 this morning to hold a final vote on whether a bear hunt will be allowed this year. A preliminary vote advanced the measure in May. Florida has not authorized a bear hunt since 2015. 
  • It'll be sunny and hot today with highs in the low 90’s, which is slightly warmer than usual for this date. A dense layer of Saharan dust is passing through the Leeward Islands and Carribean Sea today enroute towards the Gulf of America. Related... 
  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking three disturbances. A disturbance in the Northwestern Atlantic and a disturbance in the Carribean Sea are unlikely to develop. Tropical Storm Erin is expected to develop into season’s first hurricane over the next couple of days as it tracks across the Southern Atlantic becoming a major hurricane this weekend. Longer range models generally show the system likely turning north on the approach to the Caribbean towards Bermuda but it’s worth keeping an eye on this week.  
  • Gas prices rose by eight cents per gallon on Tuesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.09 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.24 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.13, it’s $3.08 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $3.10 per gallon.
