Florida News That Impacts You – August 21st, 2025

  • Governor DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier are formally backing President Trump’s push for a corrected Census following data revealing Florida’s population was undercounted by approximately 3.5% during the previous Census resulting in lost representation in Congress, the Electoral College, and related federal funding. 
  • The governor posthumously awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom to five Floridians on Wednesday. Musician Jimmy Buffett, Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Governor and Senator Bob Graham, Lt. Governor and Congressman Buddy MacKay and FSU President and state House Speaker John Thrasher were all recognized by the governor for their “meritorious contributions to the interests and citizens of the state”. 
  • It'll be sunny most of the day with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms and the high once again in the low 90’s, which is warmer than usual for this date. Saharan dust has filled into the wake of Erin from the Bahamas to the Caribbean Sea heading towards the Gulf of America. It will impact South Florida heading into the weekend. 
  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking three systems. Hurricane Erin is a category 2 hurricane with top sustained winds of 105 mph moving NNE at 17 as it begins to make its way back out towards the northern mid-Atlantic. A disturbance in the southern mid-Atlantic has a 70% chance of development just north of the Leeward Islands. Another tropical wave off the coast of Africa and has a 40% chance of development as its mostly stationary. Neither of the disturbances are concerns for Florida. 
  • Gas prices fell another three cents per gallon on Wednesday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.98 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.12 per gallon, in Martin the average is $2.99, in St Lucie the price is $3.00 and in Indian River County it’s $3.00.
