  • Governor DeSantis announced that Success Academy, a top performing charter school network nationally, will open its first area location in Miami as part of Florida’s Schools of Hope initiative which seeks to provide educational options for low-income families with underperforming schools. The move came a day after the Florida Board of Education approved a charter school expansion plan under the state’s Hope program enabling charter schools to have a presence within traditional public schools.  
  • An arbiter found that the Broward County Sheriff’s Office was right to suspend and later fire Deputy Edward Eason who failed to perform his duties during the 2018 attack at Majorie Stoneman Douglas high school. Eason hung back, failing to enter the school during the active shooting threat. 
  • Showers and thunderstorms are possible today with highs in the upper 80’s, a little warmer than usual for this date. A thin plume of Saharan dust is tracking through the Caribbean with a more significant plume just behind it, approaching the Leeward Islands and extending across the central Atlantic acting as a headwind for tropical development.   • The National Hurricane Center is tracking three systems in the Atlantic. Post Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle is tracking east through the Azores with top winds at 65 mph. Tropical Storm Humberto is northeast of the Leeward Islands and is expected to develop into a major hurricane as it approaches the eastern Atlantic and appears unlikely to threaten populated areas. A disturbance exiting Hispaniola this morning has a 90% chance of developing as it passes over the Caribbean and is a system to watch for the Carolinas. It will likely bring increased rain and storm surge to Florida’s coastline as it moves north over the weekend and into early next week. 
  • Gas prices fell by another three cents per gallon on Thursday and are 20 cents lower than a week ago. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.99 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.12 per gallon, in Martin the average is $2.96, it’s $2.99 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $3.01 per gallon.
