- Lake Worth Beach voted to move forward with two proposed charter amendments for the consideration of what’s known as the H.O.R.I.Z.O.N. development project, which if approved, would bring a Hyatt hotel, a redesigned Jack Nicklaus golf course and relocated community pool to the city. Commissioners voted to advance a referendum to adjust lease terms for properties east of A1A (allowing for beach redevelopment) and a separate referendum for lease terms on city-owned properties. A third proposal, to increase height limits in the city, wasn’t approved.
- Martin County has agreed a preservation agreement with the state of Florida to protect 1,700 acres of land from development. The land, known as Bar-B Ranch will maintain as a wildlife corridor through the Florida Forever Program which is providing $17 million for the project.
- Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers has sued the County Commission following their bitter budget dispute which resulted in an increase of $6.8 million for the Sheriff’s office, about half of the requested increase. The sheriff is alleging violations of the state’s budget procedures during the process by the county commission.
- St. Lucie County was awarded $5.1 million for transportation services throughout the county by the Federal Transit Administration on Monday. The grant will be used to enhance public transportation services throughout the county.
- This week’s King Tide cycle is likely to be the highest of the year and produced localized flooding in low-lying coastal areas on Monday including Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach. The current King Tide cycle runs through October 25th, however the full moon today will likely mark the peak of the cycle.
- Showers and gusty conditions are possible throughout the day again today. Highs in the mid 80’s, are typical for this date. A thin plume of Saharan dust is tracking over Hispaniola with a thicker plume moving off the coast of Africa acting as a headwind for tropical development. Related...
- The National Hurricane Center is tracking two disturbances. A disturbance in the southern Atlantic is expected to track towards the Leeward Islands during the week with a 90% chance of development. It will curve north towards the mid-Atlantic and isn’t a threat to the U.S. A disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of America has a 10% chance of developing near the Mexican coastline.
- Gas prices fell two cents per gallon on Monday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $3.00 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.17 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.08, it’s $3.02 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $3.03 per gallon.
