  • Governor DeSantis announced nearly $1 billion in auto insurance refunds will be issued by Progressive auto insurance to policyholders, the largest auto insurer in the state, as a result of Florida’s insurance market recovering from the litigation crisis that existed prior to legislative reforms in recent years. The governor also said it’s likely other auto insurers will soon announce premium refunds as well. The governor also noted that the top five auto insurers in the state have reduced premiums by an average of 6.5% year-over-year as reforms have taken hold. 
  • The Martin County School board has ended the long standing “no-zero” policy which prevented teachers from issuing zeros for uncompleted or completely incorrect work. 
  • Boca Raton officials said that during the first week of enforcement of school zone speeding cameras, which automatically issue citations for drivers driving in excess of 10 mph above the speed limit, a total of 210 citations were issued with J.C. Mitchell Elementary’s School zone seeing the highest volume of offenders.  
  • It’ll be mostly sunny today with gusty winds growing throughout the day and highs in the low-to-mid-80’s, typical usual for this date. A thin layer of Saharan dust is tracking over the Southern Caribbean Islands and Hispaniola into the with another plume that’s currently moving off the coast of Africa. Related...  
  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking Tropical Storm Melissa which is expected to develop into a major hurricane this weekend as it is expected to stall in the vicinity of Jamaica producing a massive rain and wind event on the island. Longer range modeling suggests the system is likely to move towards the northeast crossing Jamacia, Cuba and the Southern Bahamian Islands as it heads towards the central Atlantic. 
  • Gas prices were flat to lower on Thursday. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.95 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.12 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.00, it’s $2.98 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $2.97 per gallon.
