Florida News That Impacts You – January 14th, 2026

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

  • Florida’s annual state legislative session is underway as Governor DeSantis delivered his State of the State speech Tuesday laying out his final year priorities for the state which will include the elimination of property taxes for homesteaded properties, AI regulation, healthcare deregulation and Everglades restoration among other issues.
  • Democrat Emily Gregory and Republican Jon Maples will square off in a special election March 27th to fill the House District 87 seat to replace Mike Caruso whom Governor DeSantis appointed to be Palm Beach County’s Clerk of Court. Gregory and Maples easily advanced with each receiving well over 80% of the vote in their primary elections.
  • In Fort Pierce, Chris Dzadovsky appears to have pulled out a close win over Jaimebeth Galinis in a special election for the city commission District 2 Seat 2. The unofficial results show only 31 votes, or about 1% separating the two candidates. While the commission races are non-partisan, Dzadovsky’s win flips the city commission from a Republican to Democrat majority.
  • Cloudy skies with a chance of showers throughout the day today in advance of a cold front that will bring significantly cooler temps on Thursday. Today’s highs will be in the mid to upper 70’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.
  • Gas prices rose another 5 cents per gallon on Tuesday and are now 5 cents higher than a week ago. The average price for regular unleaded in Florida is currently $2.83 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $2.97 per gallon, in Martin the average is $2.88, it’s $2.87 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $2.86 per gallon.
