Florida News That Impacts You – April 16th, 2026

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

  • Governor DeSantis has delayed a special session to consider congressional redistricting by one week. The session is now scheduled to run from April 28th through May 1st to allow for time to draft additional legislation to be considered during the session. The state legislature must still pass a budget prior to July 1st – though that’s expected to be considered in a subsequent special session.
  • South Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick's criminal case has been delayed until February of next year. Attorneys for both sides had requested more time for discovery in the case that involves $5 million in misappropriated COVID-relief funds issued to the healthcare company Cherfilus-McCormick operated. Notably, the delay in the case extends beyond this year’s election cycle as the congressman is running for re-election as she has denied wrongdoing. The House of Representatives recently found McCormick guilty of numerous ethics violations, and she faces potential expulsion from Congress.
  • All 124 miles of State Road 80 will soon be named for President Donald Trump. The recently signed Transportation bill will officially rename SR 80 from A1A (next to Mar a Lago), across the state to the Hendry/Lee County line. The designation comes following the ceremonial renaming of a 4-mile stretch of Southern Blvd. from Palm Beach International Airport to A1A earlier this year.
  • It’ll be sunny and breezy for much of the day with highs in the low 80’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – which is typical for this date. Warmer weather is expected tomorrow and through the weekend as well.
  • Gas prices fell by 2 cents per gallon on Wednesday to a statewide average of $4.13 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.27 per gallon, in Martin the average is $4.17, it’s $4.16 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.16 per gallon.
