Florida News That Impacts You – May 5th, 2026

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast.

  • Governor DeSantis signed Florida’s new Congressional map into law on Monday. The map shifts four districts that are currently held by Democrats into more favorable geographies based upon recent election and voter registration trends with significant impacts to Districts 9, 14, 20, 22, 23, and 25. Legal challenges are expected, however the Supreme Court has ruled as recently as last week that the practices in play with the newly drawn map are constitutional, meaning that Florida’s map is likely to succeed and be in force for this year’s midterm election cycle.
  • A crowdfunding effort called Spirit 2.0, with a stated purpose of buying South Florida-based Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations over the weekend, has taken in $132 million in pledges with nearly 194,000 people contributing. Those contributing a minimum of $45 are said to have voting rights within the attempted entity. It’s unclear if there’s any viability to the project.
  • This week is NOAA and the National Weather Service’s annual Hurricane Preparedness week in advance of June’s start to hurricane season. Each day has a specific area of focus. Today’s focus is Understand Forecast Information. This includes knowing the difference between tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings.
  • We’ll have showers possible throughout the day today with highs in the low 80’s throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast – typical for this date. Rain remains possible for tomorrow along with a warming trend that will continue throughout the week.
  • Gas prices backed off of multi-year highs dropping two cents per gallon on Monday to $4.32 per gallon statewide. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.49 per gallon, in Martin the average is $4.37, it’s $4.37 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.34 per gallon.
