Florida News That Impacts You – June 3rd, 2026

  • The Florida legislature passed the Governor DeSantis’s proposed amendment to provide property tax relief on Tuesday. The bill, entitled Save our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes, passed the legislature and will land on November’s ballot. The proposed amendment holds the potential for eventual homesteaded property tax elimination. The governor’s proposal was amended to exempt non-school property taxes while raising the homestead exception to $250,000 over the next two years with the legislature having the ability to establish a plan for elimination. The proposal requires 60% support by voters in November. 
  • As part of Florida's annual Training for Emergency Management Symposium hosted by the Florida Department of Emergency Management, Governor DeSantis has launched The Coalition for Operational Readiness in Education (CORE), billed as a first-of-its-kind initiative that brings together state agencies, colleges, and private-sector partners to strengthen the future of Florida’s emergency management workforce. The governor emphasized the importance of Floridians being prepared for hurricane season. 
  • The Martin County Sherrif’s Office have taken down an organized crime ring targeting hardware stores. Dubbed Operation Hammer Time, three men from Miami Dade were charged in the thefts spanning 13 counties across the state. A fourth man is at-large. The ring targeted new Milwaukee and DeWalt power tools breaking into stores at night and returning with stolen merchandise to Miami Dade to resell it. 
  • It’ll be overcast and rainy today, with a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day. Today’s highs will be in the low 80’s – a bit cooler than usual for this date. Today should be the rainiest day, though similar weather is expected throughout the remainer of the week. The National Hurricane Center’s map is clear with no Tropical cyclone activity expected for the next 7 days. A plume of Saharan dust extends from the coast of Africa covering the northern and southern Atlantic and extending through the Southern Caribbean Sea and into the Gulf of America. 
  • The price of gas continued lower on Tuesday, dropping by another four cents per gallon. The price is currently $3.94 per gallon statewide – 33 cents lower than a week ago. In Palm Beach County the average price is $4.16 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.91, it’s $3.98 in St. Lucie, and in Indian River County the average is $4.03 per gallon.
